My one beef with Tolkien is that he glossed over battles too often. I hate how you'd hear about most of the action by people just sitting around talking about it after the fact.
I gave up on Jordan years ago. His books entertained me when I was younger but now I just don't care how the WoT series ends.
Terry Pratchett's books always cheer me up and are great for laughs.
I tried reading those Thomas Covenant books years ago but I found the main character to be so repugnant and loathsome that I didn't even bother finishing the first one.
But right now the man who reigns supreme on my fantasy list is George R. R. Martin. And I'm not afraid to say it: Better than Tolkien!
