Yeah, I just recently got into some of the Discworld books - The Hogfather, Equal Rites... good stuff. Light, but good.

Have you RA Salvatore bashers read the Hunters Blades Trilogy?

Agree totally with KB's suggestion. Frank Miller's 300 is also an excllent take on the Spartans' finest hour.

My one beef with Tolkien is that he glossed over battles too often. I hate how you'd hear about most of the action by people just sitting around talking about it after the fact.

I gave up on Jordan years ago. His books entertained me when I was younger but now I just don't care how the WoT series ends.

Terry Pratchett's books always cheer me up and are great for laughs.

I tried reading those Thomas Covenant books years ago but I found the main character to be so repugnant and loathsome that I didn't even bother finishing the first one.

But right now the man who reigns supreme on my fantasy list is George R. R. Martin. And I'm not afraid to say it: Better than Tolkien!

Can't believe no has mentioned Raymond E Feist's Magician "Riftware Saga" - I understand the trilogy in Europe was about 5 books in the US, not sure why. A couple of his later books were terrible (the one's based on the Computer game) but they picked up again with "The Serpentwar Saga".

Another author I very much enjoyed was Julian May's Golden Torc series with the follow up Galactic Milieu series.

I loved David Eddings when the Belgariad was first published, but that was about 23 years ago =p
