Did I misjudge Ankaul's Mending?

Which heal should you be using?

Well, this is a bit of a complex question. Until recently, I was using my 68 heal (Yoppa's Mending). I did the analysis below and determined that I thought the 73 heal (Ankhaul's Mending) was better for me.

That comparison was based on only having the Discordant Healing focus, and not having the Ancient Wilsik's Mending spell. In order to make this comparison more accessible, I've broadened a bit to include a higher focus (Blessing Of Anguish, 45% useable up until level 70, with a 10% degredation rate) and the Ancient Wilsik's Mending spell.

The base amounts for the heals are:

Yoppa's Base = 2468
Ank 1 Base = 2788
Ank 2 Base = 2887
AWM Base = 2716

FOCUS:
Discordant Healing = 45 @ 68, 40.5 @ 69, 36 @ 70, 31.5 @ 71, 27 @ 72, 22.5 @ 73, 18 @ 74, 13.5 @ 75
Blessing Of Anguish = 45 @ 70, 40.5 @ 71, 36 @ 72, 31.5 @ 73, 27 @ 74, 22.5 @ 75

So, 22.5 would be the focus at level 73 for Discordant Healing. (multiplier = 1.225)
And, 31.5 would be the focus at level 73 for Blessing Of Anguish. (multiplier = 1.315)

With NO AA,

Yoppa's: Max = 3578, Average = 3023 (does not change whether using Discordant Healing or Blessing Of Anguish)
Ank 1: Max = 3415, Average = 3101 (BoA: Max = 3662, Average = 3227)
Ank 2: Max = 3536, Average = 3211 (BoA: Max = 3796, Average = 3342)
AWM: Max = 3693, Average = 3204 (BoA: Max = 3938, Average = 3327)

ASSUMPTION: Healing adept mastery modifies the BASE heal amount. The focus effect is then used as a multiplier against the base total. Source = http://samanna.net/sham.info/healing.shtml

After factoring in healing adept mastery 3 ( 1.28 ):

Yoppa's Base = 2468 * 1.28 = 3159
Ank 1 Base = 2788 * 1.28 = 3568
Ank 2 Base = 2887 * 1.28 = 3695
AWM Base = 2716 * 1.28 = 3476

Yoppa's: Max = 4580, Average = 3869 (does not change whether using Discordant Healing or Blessing Of Anguish)
Ank 1: Max = 4370, Average = 3969 (BoA: Max = 4692, Average = 4129)
Ank 2: Max = 4526, Average = 4110 (BoA: Max = 4859, Average = 4276)
AWM: Max = 4727, Average = 4101 (BoA: Max = 5040, Average = 4259)

Conclusions:

If you have Discordant Healing, and do NOT have Ancient Wilsik's Mending, Ankhaul's Mending Rank 1 (or Rank 2) is better due to the higher average healing (despite having a lower maximum heal).

If you have Blessing Of Anguish, and have Ancient Wilsik's Mending, I would say that your current combination is better than Ankhaul's Mending Rank 1 (and Rank 2) because of the higher (or insignificantly lower, in the case of rank 2) average healing and higher maximum heal.

As Jaraman points out later in this thread, you should also consider your focus effects. In particular,

* beneficial spell range
* mana preservation
* spell haste

I think there are other more important factors to consider when selecting your best heal for the job rather than biggest burst. In my opinion, the most crucial things are sustainability and quickness. It's vital to get some type of very quick heal on your target that mends a good chunk of damage. As shamans main healing in a raid group, we are more likely to mitigate damage done by AEs or trash mobs than we are to join a healing chain for a MT. In groups, we usually use a HOT in combination with slow and AA heals to do our job.

In both of these cases, it's not whether heal A does +400 more healed over heal B, but whether we can constantly pump out decent heals to keep the flow going without a death. Current focuses that speed up your quick heal and increase its potency to a viable level are much more important than simply looking at potential heal size of a new trendy heal. Think about it... Do the targets you could have saved via healing die due to lack of 400 more HP or because the heal was not there quick enough to do quick patch mending?

In other words, it may be more detrimental to your skills as a healer to have the biggest but most expensive and slowest heal as your main tool versus something that is lighter, quicker, and easier on the mana pool in the long term. YMMV

400 HP is 3% of 12k HP
600 HP is 4% of 15k
200 HP is 1.5% of a 13k tank
1000 HP is ~6% of a 16k tank

Do your targets die because you missed out on that single digit percentage with which you could have healed them more? Or do they die due to some other factor not related to amount healed?

While your post certainly nails it in terms of healing / healing focus, I think you're forgetting other focuses as well. Spell haste, Mana pres, etc etc...

Idonnow...I think its kinda sad that our upgrade heal is so close to our old heal. But...once new focus is out and more spells are found, I'm sure itll be useful.

Hi,
I looted a which dropped off of The Ashengate Ambassador in Direwind Cliffs. I'm not sure if its broken, but my Qvic arms seem to be the only focus I get from casting our newest direct heal.
Something to consider?
