I mostly agree, except I think there's an important distinction between saying, "I really respect that fellow for trying to put his feelings into song." and "I like that guy's music."; One should, in fact, be able to express your feelings on the music, whether it sucks or not, entirely independantly of whether you respect the guy/gal/small furry creature from alpha centauri for producing it.
In fact, I would go so far to say that you have every right to express negative feelings with regard to someone's product as long as you don't disparage the fact that it took effort to create it. (Unless, of course, it didn't. Sometimes, you can just spot a slack-ass job.)
