I don't think Gard is on the mark this time. EQ has experienced shrinkage, and probably will experience more. But I can just point to Ultima Online to show you that once-hugely-popular games never truly go away, they just go out of style.
EQ will be around as long as there's a profit to be made. Which, in my estimation, will be always. They can always just fire people, condense servers, and otherwise reduce costs. The business model works in reverse just as well as it did when the game was growing in user subscriptions. EQ will be around for years for the gamers who love it.
I'm still retired (since GoD), but probably just because I love WoW so much. I've leveled three characters up now and its been fun each time. EQ does have an amazing amount of content, but that's to its benefit.
