The problem is trust, and inexperience. the cleric thinks he is saving the "raid" by gating, much the same that would be done back in the ldon days, cleric could get out run back and rez everyone. the problem is is unaware that nearly every class has "o shit" buttons also. when shit hits the fan, its on every member present to dump every resource into surviving. ONLY after its plain and clear that a wipe is imminent, the raid leader should be giving the command to run/evac/camp. if the raid leader doesnt give the command, you stay...period. possibly this person is afraid of dieing...which is plain ass sily since its NOT a real person, but a pixel character, and in this day and age of rogue drags, shaman rezzing, guild hall summoning, and expediant recovery, death is just a form of gate half the time.
the cleric needs help, he needs to learn to use his o shit buttons (or buy those aa and then use them, like div arb, celestial healing, mem DA's instead, epic clicks..yada yada yada). he needs to realize that gating is hurting the guild, not saving it. and that dieing to Uber_boss_203 is ok, and its happened before in EQ. The way i read your post was that your shorthanded on clerics as it is, but if you work with the cleric some, gain his trust (rangers/rogue..hell even chanters can emergency tank, dont quit just because a pally dies) and understanding of how to dig in and fight back against hard mobs, then i would consider letting them go. its a drastic step in these days of EQ where player base is shrinking, and core classes are hard to find
