Essentially requiring us to keep a cheat sheet handy so that we can tell if a new focus is an upgrade or not is just silly. There should be a message like "This would make your magic-based spells more powerful than your current gear" or something.

You mean http://samanna.net/gen.info/focus_75check.shtml where it says all that stuff already? That's a focus page, I stopped listing the focus gear - just get the links from the lucy focus. Unless you want to adopt that page...
