Both of these are ways of giving you more usable mana passively.
In tight situations, the problem is having enough time. Sure, if the fight is long and drawn out, we can regenerate enough mana to take care of everything. But when it is tight and intense, you have to slow two mobs, heal somebody, and panther three people all at the same time. You already don't have enough time to do all this stuff: and you especially don't have time to cast Pained Memory / Canni 5 to make up for all the mana you just used up.
