Yes, your experience will be different than mine. Can 5 will take a sizeable chunk of your hitpoints (always fun to make the clerics scream!). You might want to consider a hotkey to use while grouped that will let your cleric know your damage is self-inflicted. The benefit to a hotkey is that your group mates know what you're doing, the disadvantage is that a hotkey won't show you the ability re-use time.
To make a hotkey:
/alt activate 47
/g CAN 5 - I'm okay, don't heal me (or something witty if you can think of it)
In your situation, I would immediately follow a cast of can 5 with your best HOT. It was second nature to me, can 5, HOT. Can 5, HOT. Definitely leverage the heals of other people in your party. If a cleric casts a group HOT, that may be a good time to use can 5.
Don't cast can 5 in a situation where your lowered hitpoints might get the mob's attention. In the past, I generally cast can 5 between pulls. Mob inc - malo, slow, leopard/panther, nuke nuke, mob dead, can 5, hot, can 4...pause can 4 Mob inc, repeat as necessary.
