I loved the game of guessing what gear someone had just by their appearance. Armor dyes took a lot of individuality out of the game to me, because peoples' appearance was so mutable that it couldn't be associated with identity.

I'm not that fussed about armour really. I agree with Brohg - back in the day it was nice when you saw a cleric all in purple and you knew what that meant. But there are so many different armour sets that you couldn't have that anyway, really.
I don't much like chain look in the new models anyway - I always thought that my chainmail tunic looks more like a crocheted vest than something that will give any sort of protection. The older models were simpler, and not as realistic looking in detail, but at least looked more like actual armour.
Dyeing armour is similar - on chain it's not particularly great, on plate and on robes is where it makes more of a difference.
But the advantage in being able to choose your own colours is that you can recognise other people in the guild from looks, which can be handy at times.

Capes are really hard to do well. It's a large area, and if it doesn't "move" properly it looks crap.

I thought the cloaks in DAoC looked pretty good back in the day. They weren't rippling and flowing in the breeze or anything, but most of the time they looked quite acceptable to me.
I'm of two minds on the dye issue. On the one hand, I understand people wanting to be able to say "Look at my uber breastplate of shinyness!"...but then I go forth and get myself a new robe to find that it either A) Looks exactly like the Flowing Black Robe from Najena 50 levels and 6 years ago, or B) Looks like some godawful electric green dressing gown leftover from the 70s and I find myself reaching for the dye vial in a hurry.
So yeah. Honestly, I don't really like the "We want uber gear to look unique" arguement, because, let's face it...even without dyes, ubergear doesn't look unique. "That's a nice red breastplate you've got there, Mr. Bard! Is that ?" "No, it's ."
There's only so many colors out there that people can be reasonably expected to distinguish, especially amount different racial types and armor models. And I'd be willing to bet that for every piece of "uber" gear, I could, given enough time, find a piece of newbie gear that's of a nearly indistinguishable color. So who cares if people can dye their gear to look like uberarmor? People will look like they're wearing uberarmor anyway.
Until they come up with a more meaningful way of making uber gear look -different-, it doesn't matter what people do with their dyes.

HAHA!!!
and i still hold to id rather be mismatched but sorta identifiable. I agree with Brohg's early comment regarding glor's gear being recognizable.

Here's what test cloaks looked like in the Vanguard open beta (it was fun, but I'm sticking w. EQ and EQ II). They flapped around a little bit and look much better than cloaks in EQ II. When you slide down a hill or mountain, the bottom part of the cloak flips up.
