I have to admit, I've made more than one post on spelling and grammar. I won't claim to be a paragon of english knowlegde and use, but I'm old enough to at least recognize some mistakes.
During our heydey . . . er, mayday in Gates of Discord, I was actively pained to read all of the discourses on "midigation", "migidation", and "migitation." I still cringe when I see the 95% of posters who are unable to spell, "ridiculous" and yet insist on putting it in their posts.
Nothing quite takes the zing out of an impassioned plea, or a scathing diatribe, like a butchered word or glaring grammatical error that even a 5th grader can see! Typos are usually easy to see. Outright ignorance pretty much can kill a post, regardless of content.
How can you take something presented so poorly as intelligent? I liken it to nose rings. Someone with a nose ring might well have cured world hunger and found the cure for cancer, but no one is going to hear it because they'll be staring at his or her nose ring and thinking, "damn, that had to hurt. Why did he need another hole in his nose?"
Nothing says professionalism and quality control quite like a proposal to a client with bad grammar or spelling!
Communication is amazingly important.
