Several classes got traps instead of auras when they were introduced. It was an either/or thing. Auras go with the player, follow them around, benefit teammates that stay in range. Traps are set up on the ground, stationary, harming enemies that come within range. Shaman along with Necromancer, Wizard, and Rogue are the trap classes. SK & Ranger (& Bst, ty Trenolis) got unrelated abilities. The rest got auras then and some of those have gotten more or gotten upgrades since.
The shaman trap is /. They've been almost entirely obsoleted by the / spells, which have a similar utility but are more convenient to use. You'll only want an Idol in rare cases.
