1H Weapons for Lesson Burns?

Postby Hammerdahl » Fri Jan 08, 2010 2:16 pm

I'm a group geared (T4ish) 85 paladin, usually do my LoD burns in ROI using 2hs to max slay damage, I can take 2 or 3 at a time burning hot pots. I'm thinking of maxing the new shield specialist aa and the additional shield block aa's and switching to my 1hs for lesson runs to see if I can tank 4 or 5 at a time. Not asking this question specific to my toon (I don't have a magelo) but just in general, are people finding that with ss they are getting better returns soloing undead with sword and board? And with that approach, what other aa's would be valuable? Riposte ones?

Hey Hammer!
After I maxed Shield Specialist and tried 1HS exclusively on lesson burn, I got about a +1 AA gain per lesson. The weapons I had available at the time were 1HS (100/32) vs 2HP (107/29).
The mitigation with shield equipped seemed to allow an extra mob or 2 per pull.

As far as other AA's, Flurry (2/3) seems pretty blah so far. I just bought Tactical Mastery and I seem to get more strikethrough messages, but I also upgraded some gear at the same time so not sure
if it's due to that or the gear.

Keep your eye out in guild chat when people are in Cooling Chamber as there is a nice group PAL/SHD 2HP (133/35) dropping (Stoneheart Spear)

See ya around!

You're 1h a good way better than your 2h Charqule. Looking at 20% improvement to Puntual Earthsaber while your 2hs are about the same ratio. Think that might be the reason?

Charqule's 1hs is much better than his 2hp, shield specialist would of course push it up over the top. I personally do not have much problem tanking 4 or 5 using two hand weapon myself in RoI and my gear is subpar by today's standard.

Tactical mastery is easily the biggest dps increasing AA we got from last few expansions provide you are tanking of course.

I burn in ROI using a Staff of Forbidden Rites (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=85523) with a DMG aug (36/162). I get about 7-8 AAs per burn that way. I'd be interested if using an equivalent 1H & shield & shield specialist AAs would yield more AAs per burn. Anyone have a comparable 1H that has burn data available?

Thanks.

Comparable would be tower. I can get 9 AAs in illsalin on average .... really pushing my luck and burning all my timers I have gotten as high as 12 but I got purpled out a couple time on that run.

Guy in my guild claims to have gotten 22 AAs on a burn in Hills of Shade. Granted he's in the top five on our server. I was just there after my usual ROI burn and the mobs just hit too hard and fast, and have too many HPs, for it to seem a good lesson burn zone. I can handle two mobs there on me, three with LoH running, but a bad pull there = death. In ROI you can use the whole swarm/riposte slay technique to full.

Anyone else here burn lessons in HoS? How well do you do there? Where in the zone do you burn?

I've tried Hills of Shade, but I get far greater returns in Illsalin (as you mentioned, I can't do more than 4 or 5 at once in HoS without having to heal too much to make ripostes effective). I'm not going to post the count but suffice to say I get about 2-2.5 times as much in Illsalin as HoS. Using the rez stick, I can clear all of the arena + shiliskin area and repops usually start about 1-2 minutes after it's completely clear. For what it's worth, my kill rate sped up dramatically after getting Glorious Vindication - I used to be able to do about 12 aa per lesson before that spell.

Just went back to ROI and started using Vindication - I guess I'm having a hard time seeing the benefit of the spell with regards to soloing. It's 600+ mana to cast it, and it greys out your gems for a few seconds. I suppose on a mass pull it would make sense to cast it on the last remaining mob to then be able to heal up at double the rate - is that how you use it?

I pull 20-30 mobs on average tossing in glorious when it ungreys and then burst when the twinheal timer is almost over (if I need a heal). Prior to glorious, I pulled 10 mobs on average because the dps output of more often killed me due to locked out burst timers.

edit: With respect to mana cost, I have no issues staying 40%+ mana for a 30 minute span. I only cast five spells: Tunare + HoT before I start each pull, Glorious at every opportunity, Burst when needed and Protective Confession when I have a GoM.

I had the rez stick for a couple weeks. I usually stuck to Loping plains doing the graveyards vamp cave circuit which I averaged about 7aa per lesson.
I tried Frostcrypt and went down to the blue undead mobs in the big room and got about 7ish aa per lesson. I tried HoS and its still about the same as the other two spots. After reading this post I went to ruins of illsalin. It does seem alot better though I need to get my pull strat worked out. The kicker is last week I did a tower raid and got the blade of farsight and the corrupted soulpiercer. I have the shield specialist stuff done. I have fought with a two hander so long its hard to get used to the idea of sword and board. Though its a nice change just for the mitigation. I am not sure which one would be more dps. I will get back to you on the final verdict.

Im still working on it but so far I would say sword and board is the way to go. Its still close as far as dps but the difference is alot less healing with the shield and it seemed like a little bit more dps with one hander. I got 9 and a half aa with sword and board but i think I can do better adjusting my pull strat by pulling half the arena then the other half then running through the illsalin squid heads and then back to arena to finish up by then they will have repoped and seem alot softer, shrug. I went two hander and got nine aa but was oom at the end of the lesson. In all of this I was fully buffed. I know that two runs isnt enough to give a final verdict but thought I would pass on the info. I will let you know if I get any better =) . I have pretty good tower gear too so that helps alot as well.

Thanks, Xander.

I have a good 2Her (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=85523 with a DMG aug in it), but my 1Her needs some serious upgrading (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=71873 with Rune 3 aug). So for now I'll likely stick to the 2H but once I get a better 1H I'm going to switch and see how it goes.

I can confirm this.

I have Shield Specialist, Vicious Smash, and all other dps AAs maxxed. I picked up a Mindtaker on a Mindshear raid this week (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=80751), and went to ROI equipped with 1H and board. I took noticeably less damage, and was able to take on a significant amount of additional mobs, all the while letting riposte slays do its thing. I netted at least an additional AA, maybe even two. At one point I actually got too overconfident and overpulled and died. :D Thus the inexact amount of additional exp from the LoTD run.

I'm going to use 1H & board henceforth on lesson burns.

Thanks for this posts had no idea how good the xp's were there. After a few runs was able to get 11 aa's. Hard part was lining up the mobs for riposites, using DA I found I could pull the whole bleachers w/o getting summoned, hit deflection, Intensitiy and then Loh halway through the mobs, it's alot of fun there, easily 20 aa's in 1 1/2 hours.

291seconds is right under 5 minutes to kill that swarm. You absorbed 1254dps over that duration with your heals (as a point of reference, slowed trash in Husk are ~2kdps). How many monsters did you have? For those trying to replicate your feat, what weapon (with what augment), shield, overall Armor Class, total damage shield did you have?
