heal aggro, how exactly does it work? lets find out

**the new challenge is faction based, so many paladins still use the old storebought challenge. interesting to note the mana cost is unchanged over two expansions.

when i checked gruop heals noticed they have some strange timers

one major error was running through with lang on hinme

none the less, with two bursts i had overtaken his sacred force rank 2 single cast and all the procs of his languor. kinda useless info, ill redo it without languor on hinme. didnt realize he had it on 'til i saw the log. did a second look back and noticed the first burst didnt actually heal hinme for anything, hah, i rememebr now, that was the one i fired on the bird itself... *shakes head*.

clearly this needs to be redone.

but i'll show you the second bit that seemed interesting. i ran through again, and this time targeted myself instead of hinme and fired 5 different bursts without getting any aggro at all. course that might have been enough if languor wasnt on, unsure, not sure how strong lang aggro is relative to the stuns so now ill have something to test that against.

look for the light of dawn restores you, thats bursts emote.

this log looks a bit better, no languor on hinme, although his weapons out, but that wont be much damage, but next time will get someone ith a shrink wandin their primary

But you hadn't taken any damage. I thought it was fairly well accepted that heal aggro is proportionate to damage healed?

I am rather certain that it isn't. I gain a ton of agro via group heals when the group is not very damaged at all (I fire a burst at the puller, then cycle group heals/self bursts depending on the Demi Sister's script). Within about 30 seconds, I have every mob on me that hasn't been hit with 2+ agro abilities of other tanks, and even then, I am notorious for pulling them away.

The key thing with heal agro (atleast I believe) is that it is tied to agro. If you aren't on a mobs agro list in the first place, and you aren't healing someone on it's agro list... why does it care what you are doing? Which may fully explain why he was unable to generate any agro at all on the mob by healing himself. My theory would be... pull with an arrow, have Hinme then build the agro you want, and then heal yourself repeatedly for nothing. That would gaurantee you are on the hatelist, thus your actions would be noticed.

this second set was pretty decent.

four bursts and aggro, hod on inc, healing 5 - 15 percent a pop, holding back on the bursts, healing only when peaky'd gotten lower, got aggro
round 6

interesting to note that ooc timer'd start after many of the earlier heals, as if no aggro was generated ( i wasnt on the mobs hatelist ) but on latter heals it did take and i was on it, nothing'd changed other than having cast more and more heals upon peaky.

took awhile for peaky to get below 90 heh, wanted him low so the heals'd be worth more than nada

since we were trying to measure the value of a heal's aggro both of us removed any heal aggro / melee aggro focus items ( demi belt, demi shield ) and any heal focus items ( dragonscale neck )

One other thing you need to consider is that there's an initial amount of hate given to the first person to aggro a mob. You need to pull the mob, and he needs to taunt it off you. That way you've only got a hate difference of 1 instead of whatever the initial aggro amount is. Ideally you'd also be standing the same distance from the mob as him so proximity doesn't come into play. Even then it's still going to be pretty hard to get a solid parse on it, though you can just have the other guy taunt it back multiple times and keep testing.

Personally, I abuse the hell out of heal aggro. On any given raid trash clear, I almost always end up healing myself more than any other single healer heals me, and it's largely for aggro generating purposes (mezzing is boring). For most of those knight kite fights (lol rhymes), our paladins usually run circles around SK's when it comes to mass kiting mobs via heal aggro vs. ae aggro. The only real exceptions to that being when the mobs become completely trivial and the SK can get away with standing there getting beat on and casting the ae aggro spell. Their spell only has an ae range of 50 and a longer cast time, heals work as long as you're on the hate list, and it's easy enough to intentionally take enough damage for a burst, run a bit, stop for a split second to heal, rinse repeat. If you toss in an LoH or Hand of Piety (especially being grouped with other kiters also taking damage), and maybe have the expendable aggro glyph running, forget about losing aggro lol

Doing this was pretty fun on the pre-nerf Aprosis event when we were first doing it, since we usually wound up with a LOT of adds up. There were a few times where I'd end up kiting damn near the entire event, once where I was the only kiter left alive kiting all of it (40 mobs I'd bet), that was pretty hilarious. There are also at least a couple events in SoF where it comes in especially handy, one of which can basically only be done by paladins. It's also more like aggro and tank a bunch of mobs, instead of aggro and kite a bunch of mobs, which is always more fun.

Overall, at least on the raiding side of things, I'd say we're not hurting at all when it comes to aggro. Just about every event has something to keep us busy that doesn't involve turning on attack and going afk, and in most of the situations where heal aggro is helpful, there isn't much other use for our mana. Every now and then I do get more than I bargained for from mass heal hate though ;p

Personally I do not know that i agree completely that hate generated is solely tied to the amount of HP healed. I think that this may have something to do with it, as the more hp healed the more hate you will generate is true, i also think that you can heal a tank/puller with 100 hp missing and gain a great deal more hate then healing someone who has little or no aggro for the same amount of hp. I think heal aggro multiplies the amount of hate that a person has, so if you heal someone who has aggro you not only get a set amount of aggro for healing x amount of hp but you also get a residual amount of hate based on how much hate that person had generated prior to you healing them. That is why healing a puller or the tank is more effective then healing a caster who has yet to cast a nuke. Group heals are kind of funny in that effect and hard to calculate because of the number of variables tied in with it. not only do you have to take into effect every heal /buff/ beneficial effect cast no any party member after they got some kind of aggro be it via proximity or by casting a hate spell / heal spell, but you also have to take into effect how much hate said effect generates and then know how to multiply it effectively to determine the amount of hate that is generated. In a normal group all you have to know is that healing someone who may have hate generates aggro. but knowing who has more hate is hard to determine... does the puller have more hate then the main tank when mobs are inc? well did the main tank cast anything or has he just been standing there? what exactly did he cast and how did those effected by what he cast aid his hate. it is incredibly difficult to determine what is the best course of action when trying to generate hate. If you are in a group setting obviously group heals are the best way, however if your puller is not in the group, casting group heals may get you some hate but if the puller is casting an ae heal, say a bard who is singing a ae regen song and is hitting a raid, cast all the group heals you want, unless you get in aggro radius of those mobs they are most likely not going to aggro you unless you stun one of them or someone in you group does something to generate a great deal of hate v's one of those mobs.

I think everyone in this thread so far has pointed out some great facts so far dependent on your ability to read exactly what they are saying. Rihard explains perfectly how to manipulate heal aggro in what he said... unless there is some hate generated for you to build off, there is no way that a heal is going to generate any form of hate on a mob. This is the fact we are bound by which is not something that any of the other tank classes are bound, if you are able to manipulate our abilities to generate hate beyond that rule then you are able to gain aggro with heals. Is it reliable, cost effective, or designed to be our form of ae aggro? No... defiantly not... So long as your groups are set up in a way to effectively utilize our heal aggro on a raid we can perform similar tasks as a ae aggro class via heal aggro.... a cleric or a druid could do the same thing, the difference is they have aa to decrease this effect, and that they have other useful roles on said raid where as we do not.

Pretty sure (from playing my cleric extensively) that agro from heals is also tied into the cast time of the heal - which is why you can spam CH's or duration heals forever and not get agro, even if whoever you're healing is no longer generating hate on that target. Which means burst probably gets a bonus over a slower heal, like group heal, but the bigger targetgroup healed from a group heal probably more than makes up for that difference. Anyhow, just a thing to keep in mind.
