Thorn Wilting doesn't protect players. Thorn Wilting negates any DS a player has cast ON them, so that they can get the benefits of the DS buff without damaging the monsters that attack them. The usefulness is *extremely* narrow. I've heard that the cleric reverse-DS debuff has been disabled somehow in the Ambersnout event since I was there, so the only thing left to reasonably kill those mobs is ranged melee (arrows, shuriken, axes etc) and offhand attacks from dual wielding characters with Slippery Strikes AA maxed out. They'll have to equip a non-melee primary to keep from dying to their own autoattack button.
