OK I see this all the time. I am gonna make it perfectly clear:
A card is NOT FASTER just because it has more ram. Period. In other words, totally ignore the onboard ram when making a purchasing decision. The only thing that matters is the GPU used.
The 7800gs will absolutely OWN the x1600 without even breaking a sweat.

What would you guys recommend for a new video card then? I'm considering upgrading soon as well. AGP, so I don't have to replace the motherboard as well.

I have the 6800 GS from BFG for AGP. It is pretty smokin. My friend has the 7800 GS from BFG for AGP. Both have 256meg of ram. For everquest, you absolutely cannot tell the difference between the two cards, except for the 100 dollars more he payed for his. They both run flawlessly with everything cranked up. You can however see the difference when we play Battlefield 2. Both are playable and look very nice but his card does about 5 fps higher on average with the same graphics levels. We're both running the same basic systems otherwise, 3ghz P4's, 800mhz fsb, 1 gig ram, ATA 133 hard-drives.
If you're going to play BF2, Fear, Doom, etc. and your a fps junkie, then spend the extra bucks on the 7800 GS. If you're addicted to EQ like me, save yourself 100 bucks and buy the 6800 GS.
